It is more useful than fat mass alone because it accounts for your size: the same 30 pounds of fat means something different at 140 pounds of body weight than at 220. What is segmental lean analysis?
The section that looks like a diagram of a body shows the lean mass in five segments: each arm, each leg, and your trunk. Two things are worth reading here. The balance between left and right can show whether one side is carrying noticeably less muscle, which is useful programming information after an old injury or years of favoring a side. And the legs deserve particular attention: lower-body muscle does the heavy lifting in daily life, from stairs to getting off the floor, and it is where training time pays off most visibly.
What is the visceral fat level?
Visceral fat is fat stored deep in the abdomen, around the organs, as opposed to the subcutaneous fat that sits just under the skin. The InBody reports it as a level on a numbered scale rather than in pounds. Read it the way you read the other numbers: as a baseline and then a trend. It is a description of where fat is stored, and your coach can show you how the level has moved across your monthly scans.
What is the scan not telling you?
A body composition scan is a measurement, not a report card. The result sheet compares your numbers to reference ranges for your height, which is useful context, but the point of the scan is not to grade you against a chart on day one. It is to establish your baseline and then track your change. The first scan you take is the least interesting one you will ever take; every scan after it is a data point on a line that is actually yours.
